The 8th. Battalion was formed in Brisbane on the 8th August 1966 and only 9RAR was to follow later.

The VIETNAM war was barely 2 years old as far as Australia sending full Battalions to assist South Vietnam and the Government of the day had committed more troops to this war.

The writer of this page would like to consider himself as a formation member of 8RAR as I joined the battalion in September 1966 before the units actually moved to the new ENOGGERA barracks.

The Battalion left for MALAYSIA in 1967 and returned in 1969 and then to VIETNAM in late 1969 to late 1970. Later 8RAR & 9RAR combined to form 8/9 BATTALION ROYAL AUSTRALIAN REGIMENT and continued this way untill it was disbanded on 30 JUNE 1997, over 30 years later.

This page is not meant to be the history of the battalion and may never will be, however, PAGE 3 is dedicated to those of you "WHO REMEMBER".
Anyone who was a member of 8 RAR , 8/9 RAR or who was attached to, or
supported the battalion during it's time is invited to submit their memories.

The aim of the Pandanus Project it to provide Vietnam Veterans with a suitable outlet which would encourage a self motivated improvement in their existing lifestyle.
It has been well established that the lifestyle of many Vietnam Veterans is at this time cause for concern. Conversely, many veterans have managed to structure a well regulated and balanced lifestyle for themselves.
The Pandanus Project is aimed at providing something of value for all Veterans.
There are TWO major Vietnam War Memorials
in Australia.
The National Memorial
on ANZAC Parade, in Canberra the Nation's Capital
and the
Cherry Tree Walk.
The WALK is at present an on going project and funds
are sort in the form of a donation to
buy a TREE to be planted on site.
The number of trees to be planted at the WALK
will represent all those Australians killed during the Vietnam War.
