MAITLAND   TRAMWAYS

######################################################################

Due to the lack of passenger traffic the commissioner of railways gave notification that the tramway would be closed in December, 1926, and all tram services at Maitland would be discontinued from 1st January, 1927.

Just after 11 p.m. on New Years Eve 1926,and loaded with enthusiastic passengers the last tram made its way towards the East Maitland depot for the last time.

It seemed that the tramway attracted more attention than the New Years Eve celebrations being offered in East and West Maitland.

The rolling stock was all sent to Newcastle to be placed in service, sold or broken up.

The removal of the rails began in 1927.
